Students have enough time to figure out their strengths and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weaknesses and build a stellar profile in a streamlined manner. When Grade 9 or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 students come to you for counselling, ask them to think and brainstorm <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activities and subjects they love revisiting. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommend them to make a list of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those activities and encourage them to figure out why they like doing them and make a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">note of it. To help students figure out their strengths, prompt them to think about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the subject they love and ask them to think about activities they love to do without <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any push from others (parents or teachers). When they have this list handy with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them, they can revisit it and add to it as they grow. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you figure out a student\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passion, ask them to start thinking about their future by exploring their areas of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interest and start participating in relevant extra-curricular activities like joining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clubs aligned with their interests and aptitude. Make sure the student understands <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the importance of their high school grades and ask them to get down to business <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and work towards achieving their maximum potential in academics. It\u2019s the job of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the counsellor to make the students aware that the Grade 9 &amp;10 GPA plus good <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quality extracurricular activities are considered by the colleges for admission.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College admissions officers specifically look at a student\u2019s overall performance to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understand how they shaped their journey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000; font-size: 24px;\">How to Put Students to Work on Their Profile Building?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A counsellor can help students decipher their career path by having a series of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussions with them and can also take advantage of various psychometric tests <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like personality type assessments and ideal career tests. Once the student figures out <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a career path with proper reasoning, encourage them to talk to people in that field. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They might be seniors, people working in that area, or someone they know. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can try to understand the career better by job shadowing, internships, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apprenticeships, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counsellors should motivate students to focus on subjects that they are interested in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and to score well in exams. If they are struggling with a certain subject, remind <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the students that there is no harm in seeking extra help from their teachers, seniors, or tutors so that they understand the concept better and improve their scores.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic scores are considered the bread and butter of their college application. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start planning their four-year high school journey. Talk to them about what classes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they want to do in their Grade 11 &amp; 12. Help them with a plan to get there. Check <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out the challenging courses offered in the student\u2019s schools and guide them on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what they need to do to take those levels of classes in Grade 9 &amp; 10. It could be an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AP course or Honors course or an IB HL-level course. Let\u2019s talk about activities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\">Ok, now that we have discussed academics, what else can a 14-16-year-old can do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that the student is working on initiatives that are interesting and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant to them personally. I always ask my students to refrain from doing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something just to fill the space in the application. Students should understand that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this process is not just for college admissions but also for them to discover who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are and what they really like to do. Getting involved in various activities will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help them reflect and understand their personality &#8211; which is important to grow into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a better individual. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what do I suggest students can do? I motivate my students <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to do something meaningful to explore their areas of interest. Join a club that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focuses on their interest or start their own club with like-minded students to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showcase their leadership qualities. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they want to explore something new, they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are at the right stage. Ask them to go for it. I urge my students to utilize the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer wisely. Along with preparing for PSAT\/SAT\/ACT, encourage students to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be productive. This can be anything &#8211; either job shadowing, attending a summer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program, internships, working in a library, doing something to help society, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working towards a social cause that they believe in. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A counsellor should allow the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student to decide on the activity that truly reflects their personality. If you go back <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and read my previous blog on \u201cPassion\u201d you will find in detail how you can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage students to explore their areas of interest and how they can keep a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record of their activities. Make sure that your students write about their journey of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each activity\/job\/project, reflect and write about what they learned from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience. This will greatly help the student in the future while writing essays.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to reiterate to students is \u201cQuality over quantity\u201d. No one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is going to count the number of activities that the student has done but they check <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for quality and consistency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000; font-size: 24px;\">Role of a College Counsellor<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your students to research and ask them to do it well! A counsellor can assist the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student in several ways. Counsellors should be up to date with the latest trends and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equip themselves to guide and educate students based on their interests and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enlighten them with different career options. Share the information on university <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acceptance criteria, and courses that the students need to take and help them understand <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the level of merit. Always have a structured counselling plan to help students identify<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and understand their strengths, requirements, time management, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practical strategies and insights so that they can make the best decision possible regarding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0their stream selection, location of studies, and campus. Many colleges <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask for recommendations from a counsellor. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only when you know the student well, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you will be able to give an excellent recommendation letter which will be a huge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plus in the student\u2019s college application.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, I am sharing with you a few things that I encourage my students to do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which will help them make an informed decision while applying to colleges:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"> Research about different colleges and courses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"> Attend college fairs whenever possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"> Visit colleges and talk to students and faculty if possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Learn how Private, public and liberal arts colleges are different from one <\/span>another.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Look for activities, jobs, or a project in that you can participate in your interest <\/span>areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"6\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s important to discuss as a family to understand the finances and affordability <\/span>of colleges.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\"> Start researching Financial Aid, scholarship options, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\">These are some tips that you can follow to guide a 9th or 10th grader in college admission preparations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; color: #000000;\">If you are passionate about helping students in making the right career choices and want to enter the career counselling industry, become a Global Career Counsellor.
